Career Background

W Academy trainers come from varied backgrounds. Some have been self-employed stylists or barbers; some have owned their own salons for a number of years or made a career out of teaching their specific skills. We have those that have been in photography, specialising in hairstyles photo shoots; W Academy also employs people that specialised in delivering key skills while some others were make-up artists. What brings us all together though, is the love and passion we have in wanting to share our skills and knowledge to new generations of Hairdressers.

Location you deliver in

W Academy trainers/assessors operate within a wide geographical region, covering West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and beyond. This extends from Nottingham, Chesterfield, and Sheffield to Wakefield, Huddersfield and Halifax, only to mention a few.
The environment in which we work is adapted to suit our learners. We deliver classroom based theory training in the Academy itself and practical training in its Commercial five star salon. However, we also assess our learners in the salons where they currently hold their apprenticeships.

Programmes you deliver

The programmes delivered by W Academy trainer: City and Guilds standards NVQ L2 and NVQ L3 in Hair, NVQ L2 and NVQ L3 in Barbering.

How W Academy is/Works different from other providers

This Academy gives different opportunities to the learners in that they have a variety of courses and levels they can attend to help them qualify but most importantly they have a choice to either be trained in the salon or in the academy. We meet learners’ needs and salons’ requirements by catering for those who work full-time and offer them evening classes.
The salon delivery is tailored to learners that need one to one support with the tutoring and their functional skills (numeracy and literacy). The academy based classes are suitable for different kind of learners, for instance those that are shy and would otherwise struggle to make a mark, would normally be encouraged in the classroom environment by working in pairs or as a member of the group. This should develop their communication skills and also empowers them.
Another way W Academy distinguishes itself is by organising hair shows at the end of courses, giving learners the opportunity to show their creative hairdressing skills.
The managing director of our company, Mark Wildes, also organises company events/award ceremony, when not only staff but also learners have the opportunity to be rewarded for their commitment and hard work, demonstrated during the year.

Favorite aspects of being a trainer

There are plenty of advantages to being a trainer/assessor for W Academy but the best aspects of our job is by far meeting salon owners and learners who may have worked in the industry for a while already, but have no formal qualifications. It is extremely rewarding to help them through their qualification, provide guidance throughout their training and see that some of them may even embark on teaching careers themselves.
Travelling to different parts of the country and meet salon owners with whom to share experiences and best practice is also most enjoyable.
